The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) promotes the purchase of e-cargo bikes to support sustainable mobility. Companies, local authorities and non-profit organisations can receive financial subsidies for the purchase of environmentally friendly cargo bikes. The BAFA promotes the purchase of e-cargo bikes and e-cargo trailers for bicycle-based freight transport via the guideline for the promotion of e-cargo bikes.
The following are eligible to apply for funding
- private companies regardless of their legal form (including co-operatives) and type of activity (including freelancers),
- Companies with municipal participation,
- Municipalities (cities, municipalities, districts)
- Corporations / institutions under public law (e.g. universities),
- associations and organisations with legal capacity.
The respective municipality is eligible to apply for municipal enterprises without their own legal personality

Object of funding
The purchase of cargo bicycles (cargo pedelecs) and cargo trailers with electric drive assistance is eligible for funding.
An electric cargo bike is propelled by muscle power, has at least two wheels and a permanently installed device for transporting loads and may have a maximum pedal assistance speed of 25 km/h.
Eligible e-cargo bikes and e-cargo trailers must fulfil the following requirements. They must:
- be standard and brand new
- each have a payload of at least 120 kg
- offer transport options that are inseparably connected to the bicycle and can hold more volume than a conventional bicycle.
The purchase of cargo pedelecs and e-cargo trailers that are designed for passenger transport (e.g. rickshaws) or that are intended for private use (e.g. purchases, commuting) are to be purchased.
Type and amount of funding
The basis of assessment for grants is generally the eligible project-related expenditure.
Funding is available for 25 per cent of the expenditure for the purchase, up to a maximum of EUR 2,500 per electric cargo bike or cargo trailer with electric drive.
Example:
An e-cargo bike (cargo pedelec) is to be purchased for 3,646 euros (net). 3,646.00 euros x 0.25 (25 %) = 911.50 euros
