Trikes often have long chain runs, idlers and protective tubes. Care needs to cover the whole chain and its route. Follow the instructions for your drivetrain.
Check before cleaning
Park securely and switch off the electric drive. Inspect the chain, idlers and tubes for dirt, unusual noise or damage. Keep fingers and cloths away from sprockets and other trapping points. Turn the drivetrain only as the maintenance instructions allow; do not use motor assistance.
Remove dirt gently
Wipe the chain with a suitable cloth. Aggressive solvents and pressure washing are not a general solution. After wet cleaning, allow enough time to dry; moisture can remain inside chain tubes. HP Velotechnik’s instructions recommend cleaning before relubrication and wiping off excess lubricant.
Choose lubricant for the system
Use a suitable chain-care product recommended by the manufacturer and follow its application and waiting times. Dry, wet and wax systems have different requirements; changing systems may require special preparation. Avoid excessive oil or mixing arbitrary products. Keep lubricant away from braking surfaces, discs and pads.
Measure wear
A smoothly running chain may still be worn. Have it checked with a method suitable for the drivetrain, including sprockets, chainrings and idlers. Replacement limits depend on the system; a fixed mileage does not account for weather, load and care.
When to ask a workshop
- The chain skips, rubs persistently or remains unusually noisy.
- A tube or idler is damaged or misaligned.
- The boom adjustment has changed and chain length needs checking.
- Shifting fails under load or braking surfaces are contaminated.
Chain care does not replace servicing of a hub gear, crank gearbox or electric drive. Their maintenance schedules and approvals also apply.
